James Davidson Hunter wrote and interesting book on this exact thing (the
protestant-catholic coalition, not pat). the book is called culture wars
and basically says that historically the culture war in america has centered
on issues of religion (ie, burning catholics). now, however, issues like
abortion, the death penalty, homosexual rights, etc are bridging the gaps
between formerly hostile groups. it is a very interesting book. it makes
sense in that context that even though pat is a catholic, he is on the same
side of the issues are those in the christian coalition. thus they support
not his catholicism, but his harsh stance against (democracy) everything.
