Lynne Viola's books are also useful. Viola has an essay in Stalinist Terror. Her book, Russian Peasant Women, has some information that might be useful to the discussion here on homosexuality. She doesn't mention homosexuality, but she does discuss how abortion was made illegal in 1936 due to popular opposition to what was perceived as sexual licentiousness. This reflects several interesting issues: how people were empowered in the Soviet Union during the 30's, and how people once empowered may do things we don't approve of.
