Overall Resistance in Turkish prisons: [Image]

MORE THAN 1.500 POLITICAL PRISONERS ON HUNGERSTRIKE FOR A INDEFINITE TIME

Since the torturer and former chief of police Mehmet Agar was made minister
of Justice, the attacks against the revolutionary prisoners have become
stronger. Raids, the limitation of visits, attacks against the relatives,
forced transport to other prisons, isolation detention and the systematic
destruction of health because of the conditions of detention are becoming
more and more frequent.
The prisoners in the Sagmancilar-prison in Istanbul have been the first
target in this policy of repression and massacres. The media prepared the
ground for a massacre by demagogy and propaganda.
“There will be pain and bloodshed...” “It doesn’t matter if they die...” “We
should get rid of them. We could kill them all in just one night. Three
kilos of cyanide would be enough...” With words and provocations like this
the responsible persons and institutions of the state defend the inhuman
treatment of the prisoners and their relatives.
As is known, 3 prisoners in Buca and 4 prisoners in Umraniye were murdered
in attacks against the prisoners. Hundreds of prisoners were wounded, and
many of them will be disabled for the rest of their lives. Nowadays the
state practises a policy of annihilation against the prisoners by health
damaging prison conditions, the prevention of medical treatment, fascist
sanctions and orders. But not only the prisoners, also their relatives -
children, women and men of all ages - are being attacked. They are
threatened by the police, beaten, arrested and tortured.
On May 6, 1996, the repression was increased once again. The department of
Justice ordered the opening of special prisons in Eskisehir and six other
small towns. These special prisons - build for solitary confinement - are
called “coffins”. Since this order, all people who are detained by the State
Security Court in Istanbul for political reasons are held in these prisons.
Since May 7, almost one hundred prisoners have been brough to Eskisehir.
To resist against injustice and brutality, to fight for a human and
dignified life, this is the right of all people. The revolutionary prisoners
are claiming this right. In 35 prisons they answered with a hungerstrike and
overall resistance against the terror attacks and policy of massacres of
fascism against the prisoners, especially in Sagmalcilar, Umraniye and Buca.

The national Central Co-ordination of the Prisons decided to stage a
hungerstrike for a indefinite period of time, starting on May 19, with the
participation of more than 1.500 prisoners. The demands are:

   * the withdrawal of the May 6 order!
   * the closure of Eskisehir and the other isolation prisons!
   * no more attacks against the relatives!
   * no hindrance of medical treatment and the attending of the court
     sessions!

Not only the relatives, but a large people’s movement is participating in
the overall resistance of the prisons. To stand up against these fascist
attacks which are carried out with Nazi methods, that is not the task of the
prisoners only, it is the task of all people, institutions and parties to
stand up against injustice and brutality, to stand up for democracy, freedom
and human rights. It is the duty of all democratic, progressive and humanist
organisations, who defend the human dignity, to stand up against the cruelty
inside the prisons and to put pressure on the Turkish state in order to
support the dignified struggle of the prisoners. Let’s support the dignified
resistance of the political prisoners! Let’s not allow new massacres inside
the prisons! Let’s fight against the policy of repression and massacres of
fascism!

Withdraw the May 6 order!

End the repression, the attacks and the massacres inside the prisons!

Down with fascism, long live the honorable resistance of the prisoners!

Long live the international solidarity!
