Rakesh, apparently without knowing whose proposal it was, Jerry Levy
has inquired about your proposal. Do you want me to put him in touch
with you? I would very much be in favor of discussing the parallels
with PEN-L and OPE-L etc. I simply was under the assumption that
these lists were beyond our reach. If we can start an official
cooperation that would be great. But I understand that Jerry can be
an extremely difficult character. What do you think?

Hans:

Could you please send me a copy of the proposals for the above two
potential lists (since the proposals have not been posted on marxism2 or
marxism-news)?

Regards,

Jerry

Hans:

Some follow-up comments and questions:

(1) Regarding the second of the above, I assume that it would be list on
*reading* Capital (since if it were anything other than the above, it
would be repetitive of what the mpe list would discuss). Is that
    correct?

(2) If it would be a list that would read Capital, I would suggest several
    things:

    (a) that the list be limited in terms of a maximum number of
participants (for reasons that any student or instructor knows
        well);

    (b) that it be agreed that new participants couldn't join after a
certain point of the "semester" (i.e. they would have to wait for
the next "course"). I think this is valuable since "new"
participants who join mid-discussion would be (non-maliciously)
        disruptive for the group.

    (c) the schedule would have to be posted on other lists well in
advance of the start of the reading and that possible
participants be told that they will likely have to invest a
substantial part of their time in order to read Capital, follow
        the discussion, and participate.

    (d) if the object would be to read the three volumes together (as
opposed to just reading VI), then anything less than a year is
unrealistic. Two years would be a preferable timetable, IMHO. I do
know that there is a closed list on reading Capital in Japanese
that is planning to - hopefully - work through the 3 volumes in
        4 years.

     (e) moderating such a list would be a *big* job. I would suggest
         several co-moderators.

     (f) if my assumption above is correct about systematically working
through Capital, I believe I know a number of people who might be
willing to lead the discussion on a particular chapter (by
writing summaries ... making suggestions for secondary
readings. ... offering a paper. ... or asking questions.). I
think there might be some on OPE-L who would be willing to
         participate in that way.

(3) Regarding the possible mpe list, you are aware that there a number of
other lists that are related (PEN-L, OPE-L, CAP-L, EM-L). If there is to
be another mpe list, then I think that its difference from the above lists
should be specified. I am not either in favor of or opposed to this
proposal at this time, but I would like to hear more about it from its
proposer.

If you wish, you may forward this to marxism-administration.

Take care (as Jon is fond of saying).

Regards,

Jerry
