I seem to have missed some of this debate, but did I really read 
correctly that Adam Rose defends Engels's extension of dialectics into 
nature?

Roy Bhaskar is good on Engels's use of the dialectic: see pp150-1 of 
_Dialectic:The Pulse of Freedom_:
"While the evidence strongly indicates that Marx agreed with the 
general thrust of Engels's intervention, his own analysis of capitalism 
neither presupposed nor entailed any dialectics of nature."

On the book of the same name, I liked the bit about the parrot best- 
that they came to understand the words they spoke....
