Subject: How to unsubscr*be from the marxism list etc.

Here is an occasional reminder of the commands how to unsubscr*be, how
to subscr*be, how to use the "who" command which shows who is
subscr*bed, and how to access the archives by mail, www, and ftp.

To unsubscribe from the marxism list, send the one-line message:

   unsubscribe marxism

or:

   unsubscribe marxism-digest

to:

   majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.EDU

The "unsubscribe" command must be in the body of the message, the
subject header of the message is irrelevant. Unsubscriptions are
automatic unless you send your request from a different e-mail address
than the one at which you are subscribed. Those requests will first
go to the "list-owner" for approval, which may take a day or two.
By the way, if you prefer a quieter list, you may want to check out
marxism2 (use the subscription instructions which follow but replace
marxism by marxism2).

To subscribe to the marxism-list, send the one-line message:

   subscribe marxism

or:

   subscribe marxism-digest

to:

   majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.EDU

If you subscribe to marxism, you will get all messages individually.
If you subscribe to marxism-digest, you will get the same messages,
but packed in handy "digests". The subscribe command must be in the
body of the message, the subject header of the message is irrelevant.
Subscription is also automatic unless you use an address that the
majordomo software does not recognize, or you are already subscribed
at another address, in which case the request will be forwarded to the
"list-owner" for approval.

To get a list of all subscribers, send a message consisting of the two
lines:

   who marxism
   who marxism-digest

to:

   majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.EDU

To get a list of the archive files, send a message consisting of the line:

   index marxism

to:

   majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.EDU

You will get a list of files which can be retrieved by the "get"
command. Here is the example of a get command which retrieves a
an archive file which has messages sent out before July 19,
1996, 18:39 GMT (you will receive a mail message of about 360
Kilobytes long):

   get marxism marxism_1996/96-07-marxism/96-07-19.183

Again, this command must be sent in a mail message to:

   majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.EDU

To receive a survey of all majordomo commands,
send a message consisting of the line

   help

to that same address.

The www-URL of the marxism list is

   http://jefferson.village.virginia.EDU/~spoons/marxism_html/

To retrieve the archives of the marxism list by ftp, you have to

   ftp jefferson.village.virginia.EDU

log in as user "anonymous", and then

   cd pub/pubs/listservs/spoons/marxism.archive

The latest messages are in a file named "current" in this directory.
Somewhat older messages are in a file named "RECENT" in the same
directory. To get the archive files proper, you have to cd to
one of the annual directories, say marxism_1996, and then cd to one of
the monthly directories. The names of the archive files themselves
are made up by the date of the *last* message they contain.
