Subject: Reading recommendations

1) Monthly Review, Sept. 96, has an article by Doug Henwood on "Post
What?", an edited version of a talk he gave at the last Socialist Scholars
Conference on a panel with Harry Magdoff and Ellen Meiksins Wood. There
are some terrifically pointed criticisms of the whole notion of
"globalization", an idea embraced by many post-Marxists. I was there and
swear to you that it was truly inspired stuff.

2) Scott McClemee, another list member, has a book about to hit the stands
called "CLR James and the Negro Question". (The publisher's title, not
his.) Scott is one of the top James scholars in the USA today and, because
he makes his living as a writer and not a professor, can write
fantastically well. I urge everybody to go out and buy 2 copies.
(University of Mississippi Press). Check this Sunday's NY Times Book
Review also; there's supposed to be a review. Pretty soon this guy will be
too big and famous for our list. Well, that's what the moderated list is
being set up for: to make literary lions feel right at home.
