Subject: Iraq and the US working class

 >> In other words, the imperialism of the bourgeoisie has at this point
resulted in racism among the masses, which has then been manipulated by a
bourgeois politician in a cynical electoral ploy as Clinton attempts to
show that he too believes that the US is bound to lead. <<Rakesh B

 Jon Flanders:

I wouldn't quarrel with this as a picture of the situation right now. Keep
in mind though, that this is a snapshot in time. US workers actually did go
last time and may have to go again to the Gulf if this drags on. When your own
ass is in the sling, for something that looks increasingly dubious on a number
of levels, then you may well listen to the anti-war opposition to the renewal
of war in the Middle East.

Some of the best discussions I have had around international questions in
the shop have been with a young (sergeant?) in the naval reserves who did six
years of active duty, and could be called up if this stuff keeps going. He has
been completely open and listens carefully to serious political debate.

I am looking forward to the situation that could develop around Iraq. It
seems to me that the ruling class is unsure how to proceed. Bush cut the war
short, in part, to avoid the casualties that a prolonged occupation would
bring. Now, the cost of that option is becoming clear. Look for cracks in the
bi-partisan united front. There are already signs of them. After a few more
Republican gibes, how long will it be before some Democrat takes a swing at
Bush for "not finishing the job."
