Date: Thu, 04 Apr 1996 09:34:03 -0600 Subject: **Official Announcement** please read All this talk of "list dynamics" is intolerable. Also, there is no point in Spoon having two lists which are identical. We need some way to distinguish between the two. So, I'm proposing within Spoon to create a "special purpose" "closed" list. I'd like to hear positive suggestions of desire _for_ that list-purpose. Here's my summary of what many on this list want that I think is different from M1, some of which you have mentioned or discussed already: Creative application, interdisciplinary, non-sectarian, social totality. I will propose to spoon that in order to address this special purpose, the list must be "closed". This just means the moderator controls subscriptions, as necessary. No "management" of discussion is needed, and no more discussion of "list dynamics" would occur. I suspect that I am not the only one who cannot stand much more of that. I also don't look forward to any discussions of who to boot, why and why not, etc. A special purpose closed list should put an end to all of that. The statement of a "special purpose" can also make it clear that "this is a carrot list", so that people who want to talk about "potatoes" may be able to see that it is just not relevant to a "carrot" list. Now, this discussion with Spoon is going to take some time, I'm not sure how much. I don't want people to be left unhappy in the dark, so I'm giving out this information, but this list should be used for actual discussions, as it has been already for a week - much excellent traffic I think, in it's very first week! Therefore, although I have sinned before, I resolve not to respond to any bait posted here, and I STRONGLY encourage you all to do the same. I am sure that Spoon will act upon my proposal, so please do not bother to try to "defend" the list with endless argument. [I thought my patience was rather frazzled already, but I shall endure.] By the way, everyone is free to propose another list for their own specific, different purpose. There is no a priori limit on the number of "marxism" lists that Spoon may create. Just join the list called <list-proposals>, and start talking. Write to: majordomo-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.edu with the usual: subscr'be list-proposals Thank you for your patience, your self-restraint, and your interest in creative discussion.
