Date: Tue, 9 Apr 1996 06:33:14 +-200 ------ =_NextPart_000_01BB25E4.F2097D60 Hugh quotes: >How long Red Spain (possibly reduced at just about parts of >Catalonia and the City of Madrid - the rest would have fallen to Franco just >about immediately should a political earthquake as the one that would have >resulted from the installation of a proletarian dictatorship had broken out) >could have lasted against the armies of germany, Franco, Italy, France and >Britain, and even possibly Japan and the USA? Jorn: I would just like to add to Hugh's reply: Red Spain *was* reduced - not because the enemy was stronger, had more arms etc - but because of wrong politics. 1. The Popular Front government abstained from fighting Franco's army for several days after he had rebelled in Morocco and also after he entered Spain. A fast response in the form of mobilization of workers and peasants could have stopped Franco in July 1936. 2. The Popular Front government would *not* give indepence to Morocco. Had they done this it would have undermined Franco's army - many of his most cruel soldiers were from Morocco. An independent Morocco would have drawn these soldiers out of the fascist army. 3. The Popular Front government would *not* give the land to peasants. Had they done so the peasants of Southern Spain would have something to fight for and Franco wouldn't have been able to advance through to the North within a few weeks. All these policies were sanctioned by the Stalinist Communist Party. This party was a small party of the middle classes that only grew to influence with Stalin's guns. These were used to take back the land >from the peasants and the factories from the workers. This may be the "standard trotskyist view" - but IMO a view that has not been seriously challenged. Of course history can only tell what *did* happen, and not what could have happened. But the fact that Spain became a beacon after the defeats 2-3 years before (in Germany 1933 without a serious fight; in Austria 1934 with one) points to the possibility that had the spanish revolution been lead by Marxist revolutionaries the outcome might have been different - also outside Spain.
