You can clean them unless the area where they were harvested is too 
polluted. In the US, many states by the seaboard close off areas for 
shellfishing if there is extreme pollution. Aren't there laws in the UK 
like that as well?

I'm not a veggan, but there are organic veggies --> expensive!

If you clean the veggies thoroughly and cook them properly, that should 
mean that they won't dissolve metals (or stomachs).
