Subject: Re: QUERY: HISTORY OF AMERICAN MARXISM (fwd)

Justin, thanks for your attempt to answer my question, but your
answer covers only a small part of the query. I'm aware of the
huge literature on the history of the Communist Party and of some
of the work on the anti-Stalinist left. But this was my
question:

>A friend of mine is interested in the history of marxism in the
>US from the 1930s to the 1950s. He's interested in references
>to both significant theoretical works produced in the US at the
>time and to historical works on the development of marxist
>theory and practice.

You've covered the 'practice' part. Perhaps the New York
intellectuals have something to do with theory, though I can't
name their theoretical contributions to Marxism in spite of the
score of books I have read about them. Of course I know the work
of CLR James and his tendency. But otherwise, what were the
significant _theoretical_ works produced during this time period,
and what good books are there on the development of Marxist
_theory_ in the USA?
