But could you start by defining what you mean by piece-meal and giving an example to illustrate what's wrong with it? Generalities about "parts" and "wholes" often seem like truisms to me, that in principle are agreeable to everyone including scientists. So, when disagreements occur, I suspect that it is because people are holding often unspoken beliefs about the implications of "wholism", and have perhaps some examples in mind. I think that getting down to cases would help to clarify just exactly what is the content and the point of such a critique of science.
