Thank you for your thoughtful and frank reply.  It's a shame it wasn't
posted early on because it would probably have saved me a lot of trouble.

Regarding the "duck pond," it's ironic, because I deliberately joined the
moderated group because I wanted to avoid infantile tirades by John
Birch types in response to my entirely sincere questions.  I was honestly
surprised to find myself subject to this from Marxists themselves.
