From: "Rosser Jr, John Barkley" <rosserjb-AT-jmu.edu> Date: Wed, 18 Sep 1996 12:49:48 -0400 () I, too, feel the need to say something upon learning of the unexpected death of our lisa. I had not met her, but had hoped to. We had numerous offlist discussions and had exchanged papers (that's what petit bourgeois academic intellectuals do rather than having sex, :-)). She was always fair-minded and committed. I think that Hans D. may have overstated it when he called her "dogmatic," but she had very definite opinions about things and stood her ground. But unlike many of us, myself included, she always did so in a calm and forebearing and reasonable manner. I feel bad that I made fun of her several times as the "baroness lisa," on the list and knocked M2 somewhat as the "duck pond." But she understood offlist that I was being humorous and that I thought and think that marxism2 has been an intelligent and well-run list. Compared to the flounderings of left-unity, her straightforward, if somewhat arbitrary, rules seem utterly reasonable. I had, and have, the deepest respect for lisa as a person, an intellect, and a committed progressive activist. I am especially impressed that she could come out of a deeply conservative background such as Utah mormoism to her ultimate views. I do not know if this was told to the whole list, or just to me in an offlist message, but lisa worked as environmental planner for the state of Utah prior to her return to grad school. Even if mormonism was originally socialistic, it isn't these days. I am beginning to maudlinly ramble, but, heck, I am really am deeply saddened and upset by this. As with many others on these lists, I felt that I really knew her, and what I knew, I cared for very much (and I am a happily married man). Do svidonya and adios, lisa.
