Subject: in sorrow

I had the pleasure of sharing brunch with Lisa this summer here in the San
Francisco Bay Area. She had driven with friends all the way from Utah for a
protest against the Republican Congress. We spoke for hours and then I
took her to my favorite bookstores. We both were dead broke, and since we
liked hearty brunches, we had already spent all our money . Lisa was very
interested in evolutionary biology and its implications for social science.
No doubt, her stimulating conversation inspired me to pick up later John
Vandermeer's Reconstructing Biology: Genetics and the New World
Order--indeed one of the most important books I have come across in my
studies.

I was looking forward to engaging with Lisa based on the knowledge she
had inspired me to pursue. Having met Lisa in all her vibrancy and
brilliance, I just couldn't have imagined that she had been suffering in
this way. I express my deepest sorrow to all who knew her and I wish you
the strength to endure this tragedy.

With all my best,
Rakesh
