Michael G. Lacy wrote an interesting dissertation on the rhetoric of
racism in about 1991 at U Texas Austin.  Among other things, he analyzed
"letters to the editor" in major and minor newspapers, and he
demonstrated how they embody both overt and covert "hate" messages.
Michael has also published articles and book chapters on related topics,
but I don't have any ready-to-hand citations.  Cheers.
