The Eternal Return, as i understand Nnietzsche, does indeed relate to a repetition of events coupled w/ the drive towards self -perfection. . Con- sider the following: an amateur ice skater is obvious to everyone, even to the "man in the street", untudored in the nuances of skating. Even he notices the awkwardness, clumsiness of the amateur. As times progresses, the amateur becomes self conscious...of his mistakes. Thru constant and vigilant discipline and repetive practiice the amateur begins to acquire grace. He has overcome his "clumsy self". nOnly that part of his skating behavior which has attained perfection returns...unconsciously. Now, this skilled skater cannot go back to his former "clumsy" skating self. All of his skating behavior is informed by the Eternal Return. This interpretation is in keeping with Nietzsche's epi-phenomenalism where the mind is merely the instrument of the body. al --- from list nietzsche-AT-jefferson.village.virginia.edu --- ------------------
