All it means, Chris, is that the thing is defined by its relations--in
other words, a thing without relations would be a _nothing_.   Apropos
here is a term from the art world--"negative space."  Every artist, if
they are any good, develops a keen sense for exactly these spaces, the
"negative" spaces, which all the same carry a positive, and deciding,
aesthetic import.  It seems to me you are taking "words" as things-in-
themselves, that is, as only having isolated and single meanings,
rather than being defined by their relations, if you will.
