Babette's trashing of Wagner audiences reminds me a bit of Nietzsche's early
comments on the Bayreuth patrons....

My tickets are for "Die Walkure" in S.F.  Hopefully Nietzsche will whisper
in my ear and make the music endurable, otherwise it will not be.

Meanwhile, this discussion reminds of the lurking question of why Nietzsche
broke with Wagner. Was it over the nerve-shattering music that destroyed his
health? Parsifal's sell-out to Christianity? The "malignancy" of Wagner's
old age? Or something else? 

What was "the offense"?
