I assume you're referring to Nietzsche's father. Pastor Nietzsche died of 
a brain disease that was, in its time, termed as "softening of the 
brain." That was a sophisticated way of saying that they didn't know what 
it was, except that it had something to do with the brain. It is 
difficult to tell exactly what it was that killed him from the records 
kept at the time, thus it is possible that it was something that we now 
know is hereditary. I admit, however, that the disease that Nietzsche's 
father died from doesn't seem very similar to Nietzsche's illness.
