This fascinates me too. I've seen video of clinical schizophrenics in the throws of supposed dementia, and while the narrator is rambling about dopamine and drug-therapy, I'll here fantastically sensitive and insightful commentary coming from the "maniac" in the background. It's amazing how many N. historians have summarily condemned the accounts of his "decline" as fact. There is very little academic speculation about the true nature of his "removed state."
