More pretentious and more refined, there's no conflict between the two.
Actually, I thought an attempt on my part of adopting the mocking tone of
Goethe's Mephistopheles in _Faust_ might be somewhat provacative. I had
hoped to provoke thought but as can be seen the best I could get was "mere"
idle speculation.
