No, 'looking around' is not particularly painful (difficult but not painful). It is the Little Man that feels it as painful, and thus shrinks from the obvious realization that Man has little or nothing to be loved for. The sister and the mother will not recur - only affects can return, and at that, only joyful ones. What you deem is N's concept of the ER is merely the rediscovery (by Schopenhauer, and by N at a moment in his life) of an ancient 'terrible truth' which, eventually, N decoded and escaped: hence, the esoteric concept of the ER. One proof of the sheer unloveability of human beings is the inability (patent in this list) to accept and do something creative with the gifts Nietzsche generously offered us. But then nature offered us more, and with it we manage to do even less of any good. LC --- from list nietzsche-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
