The last two questions first (they're really beside the point, but I don't
mind):

Q: Where can be found the metaphysical essay by Arthur Schopenhauer in
which he speculates that we are each the "secret theatre-manager" of the dream
that is dreaming us . . . that, as paraphrased by Thomas Mann, "our fate may
be the product of our inmost selves, of our wills, and we are actually
ourselves bringing about what seems to be happening to us."

[Note to Engineer-man: No, I think this is not at all like what your master
means when he exhorts you to "will the inevitable."]

A: "Transcendent Speculation on Apparent Design in the Fate of the
Individual" in Schopenhauer, PARERGIA AND PARALIPOMENA, vol. 2, pp. 201-223.

It's a wonderful essay. I had to pirate and bind my copy for myself, of
course, but I carry it with me everywhere.

Malcolm said, essentially, don't ask Schopenhauer questions on my Nietzsche
list.
My contrite reply: 1) there is no Schopenhauer list that I am aware of; 2)
what about the formative influence of Schopenhauer on Nietzsche?, and 3)
doesn't this lead straight into an enlightening discussion of amor faté, ER,
Nietzsche's emergence from Schopenhauer's (and Wagner's) influence and his
declaration of independence, the errors of metaphysical systems, etc, etc.?

Re my sentiments regarding Engineer-man:

How can I indeed? It occurs to me that Engineer-man could be my best drinking
buddy for all I know. I have no personal feelings about him at all. If I
were to learn that my best drinking buddy is him, then I'm sure we'd have a
rolicking good time over the fact. What a liberating process this has been!
Engineer-man, I love you, man!

Fritz
