I don't know if I would be able to deal with 'love' If
I held the future of mankind in my hand as Nietzsche
believed he did. As he has stated often enough, his
journey was lonely, over icy mountain tops, through
deserts, etc. To take mankind and the universe as your
object without the mediation of a lover, as most
mortals do, requires concentration and harshness. This
does not mean that Nietzsche was incapable of loving
or that no one qualified. His object of love on that
morning in early January was - a horse.
