I would need to read lots more of Deleuze and Nietzsche to follow the intricacies of the discussion, but what interests me for the moment, is if and how the philosophic references to chance/necessity would be "applicable" or enlightening in some way for an abstract painter like myself. As an artist, I sense the experience of both phenomena which I would describe as follows: Chance: One begins an abstract painting with the chance placing of marks, gestures, shapes, tones, intensities, on the canvas. Thus, forms or structures are initiated without any de- determined, causal relation. Necessity: The desire to take up abstract painting as a profession is itself an historic condition, i.e.., it's possibility could not have appeared in the 18th century for example. One could go on and on with such examples, but I would rather ask at this point, whether such concerns make any sense to those of you on the Nietzsche lists. Thanks, and by the way, if any of you are interested in viewing samples of my work, please type my name, Edwin Ruda, in the search engine, "Google." --- from list nietzsche-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
