Surely the relation between painter, process, and materials is informed by
both a personal and cultural psychogenesis. There are many styles of
abstract painting, many different techniques, many ways of expressing the
relationship between artist and material. Speaking of "an abstract painting"
is almost as nebulous as speaking of "a modern novel."
