GETTING BACK ON TRACK
This week's TIMES is devoted to putting back into
perspective certain existential issues that seem to
sooner fall by the wayside the more seriously you
begin to consider them. I am talking about how certain
concepts pertaining to bettering the community, and
how, as a mediated force, such concepts should
enhance 'being' from within and without, but rather,
in their obtuse abstractness, suddenly go all askew in
reality, turning the attempted application into
something so foreign from its original intentions
that, upon further reflection, we find we have not
only abandoned our initial cause, but have almost
totally forgotten where, why, how, and exactly what it
was we were contemplating in the first place.

Thus, to get back on track, that is in regard to
emancipating consciousness from all possible wrongful
restraint, I have decided to index relevant messages
which, I think, in one way or another bear upon the
current globalization of things, and the various
repercussions they have on community and individual.
Hence, both the indices below encapsulate a call for
awareness, the first more so from a microcosmic level
-- the immediate affect of the status quo on the
individual -- while the second explores more so the
macrocosmic implications, that is, the possible affect
of the same status quo on society as a whole:

INDEX-1: THE MICROCOSMIC STATE OF MIND: 'BEING', AS
A RESULT OF THE GLOBALIZATION OF THE MODERN
         CAPITALISTIC WELFARE STATE:

VINCETRUMENTAL : 'FILTHY ANIMAL 2002'
If you don't believe that there's some strange
ambiguity going on here, a peculiar vindictiveness,
maybe even greed and apathy which has possessed the
post-modern ethos of late-capitalism, then you
probably won't think much of this song either. For me,
though, this tune purveys the aforementioned
sentiments rather succinctly -- just a reflection of
THE TIMES, I guess, as the actual musician doesn't
reveal much of himself, other than he'll sell you a
song for as low as $25 (another reflection?). Click

IN RETROSPECT: WHY THE EXISTENTIAL TIMES?
THE TIMES evolved on its own while I was working on a
so-called 'Missive In Progress', about Schopenhauer
being a sort of catalyst for what might today be
considered existential thought. I labeled the essay 'A
Missive In Progress' as it was originally conceived to
be a ongoing series, compiled of parts, or what I
later referred to as 'leaps', some greater than
others, in which I would ultimately prove my thesis.
Part One of the series in which there will probably
never be a Part Two is available at the following
link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheExistentialTimes/message/261

The reason why you will more than likely never come
across additional parts to my 'Missive in Progress' is
because I soon realized, however, that not only would
my endeavor require an enormous amount of research,
but, in the end, would also require a living form of
evidence to support my original claim. Now it was
while experiencing several setbacks, that is, in
attempting to prove my point systematically on various
mailing lists, including one devoted especially to
Schopenhauer, that I started thinking perhaps I was
going about it all wrong. Finally, I came to the
conclusion that the most affective way to present
Schopenhauer as an existential catalyst would be to
jump forward to the anticipated ends. After all, each
of the mailing lists, as independent societies, were
proving to be too closed for the cause, and, it became
rather obvious that to give my case its due, I would
need to reach out to the furthest possible limits,
meaning I could no longer restrict myself to any
single list or dialogue, but would rather have to
attempt to express a synthesis of my experience,
wherever it should take me, that is, of course, in
regard to the case in point. I was now completely
ready for not a series of leaps, but rather one giant
leap of faith -- to borrow the Kierkegaard phrase --
whereby I would thrust myself forward, immediately
onward to the existential, hoping it would somehow
lead back to Schopenhauer. For it is my contention
that much of Schopenhauer's fundamental philosophy is
understood intuitively today, that is to say much of
it is prefigured in modern consciousness by the
'collective' cosmology or the 'noosphere', as Jung and
Teilhard de Chardin wrote about them, and even Freud
as a convert of Ernst Haeckel's 'law of
recapitulation', which stated that the growing embryo
repeats the entire history of the species past
evolution in its own development.

In its own regard, however, I can say without
hesitation that THE EXISTENTIAL TIMES would not exist
as it does today if not for the negative effect its
antithesis, that is, my 'Missive in Progress',
instilled upon me once I submitted it to the
Schopenhauer ML, a list I send my writings to
frequently. My transition into THE TIMES did not fully
come to be, though, until after a couple of New Year's
postings to the S.ML, which were all but totally
neglected, though, I think, they may have contain some
of my best writing. Nonetheless it has not gone to
waste, as its core ideas could, just the same, be used
to this very day in, say, A MANIFESTO OF THE
EXISTENTIAL TIMES, should ever I get around to it. In
the meantime, though, perhaps these two original New
Year's postings would somewhat suffice such a cause:
