i mean that saying 'things are better here than anywhere else' is a way of deflecting criticism much akin to a remark like: 'oh you don't like the US military? well go live in iraq.' historical context is always important like, how are our daily lives different from ancient romans? or, what did this empire learn from previous ones? but if we begin to rate civilizations, and situate a value-hierarchy based on unquestioned status quo assumptions, then we've reified facsist mentalities which need ferreting out.    :kev
