To Howard's question, "Could art have been construed as the imitation (or
expression)
> of personal feeling before the rise of captialism?"

Joerg responds, "That remains at least doubtful. What about Sappho? Or Catullus?
Or, say,
Gilgamesh mourning his friend Enkidu? Was it just they lacked theory?"

Maybe art is helping personal feelings to grow (unfold? develop? evolve?) by
providing a repertoire of available experiences? The analogy here would be to a
coral reef of personal sentiment, accreted through centuries. Not to imply
there is "progress," merely change.
