Stevens, much more than Rilke, tries to proxy religion. For example, while visiting a Russian monastery during his 20s Rilke immersed himself in what he described as spontaneously received prayers. When he returned to Germany, he transcribed the series of sacred love poems he "received," and which now make up the devotional poetry available in English as RILKE'S BOOK OF HOURS: Love Poems to God. --- from list phillitcrit-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
