Subject: Bad Writing Contest

Forty-two Phil-Litters are now subscribed to the "meta"-list, which seems
sufficient mass to support a discussion. Privately, Walter C. Okshevsky has
complained to Denis Dutton about the Bad Writing Contest sponsored by
PHIL-LIT and _Philosophy and Literature_. Two of the new Advisory Board
members, Mirembe Nantongo and Nancy Strickland, have suggested that the
whole issue should be discussed on MPL; and I agree with them. To that end
I've asked Walter to spell out his objections to the Contest. There is no
real reason to wait for Walter, though. If others have objections, they
should feel welcome to lay them out. Perhaps those who wish to defend the
Contest ought to wait until the critics have (or at least have begun to
have) their say.
