Jean,

A lot of people run around threatening to sue, because they're angry and
expect this kind of threat to frighten other people. Most adults, and all
institutions, know the law well enough to realize that if whatever you've
done is not illegal, the police will not arrest you and you are not going to
get sued. Or, if you are, the courts will find in your favor. So it's not
very effective as a scare tactic.

This is not a criticism of your father in law. People often do make threats
when they're angry. I have to say I admire the university and the collective
for sticking to their principles. Also, it's important to uphold the dignity
of the courts. They're there to enforce the law, not to be used as a tool in
every petty spite battle one party might have with another. Granted, the
courts don't always work the way they should. But this is the way things
ideally ought to be.

Most of all though, you're not being very clear for those of us who don't
know you or your father in law, and have no idea what happened. Could you
please say more about what the problem was?

Thanks.

pat sloane
