George,

I get the impression you're running rings round me with 'functional
ambiguity' (and good old fashioned piss-taking) of your own... it's good,
mind. Anyway, the Thoreau reference is interesting - I looked him up. Not
really sure whether you can take John Lennon's political phase all that
seriously, though. Or perhaps I should say, I haven't been used to taking
his political phase all that seriously - which is different. But can we
separate Art and Politics that easily? - hmmmm... one of my very favourite
topics, but too much to get into now.

But the ambiguity, certainly. And more than that he was pretty good at the
surreal (I am the Walrus) and revitalising cliche (All you need in Love).
And just generally good. But you can't beat the lyrics to 'Hey Jude' -
McCartney was a genius himself, in a different kind of way. 

But I do wish you'd stop saying tantalisingly interesting things, Dr Trail,
I'm trying to get off this list...
