Subject: Re: PLC: A theory about theory [was Anyone get Gass?]

As an honest question -

Reg, I too (along with George) am interested in what I would study if I
were to examine musical theory (at least, philosophical music theory.
There are many music departments who might offer me education in the
tradition techniques of playing, and many apprenticeships I might take to
learn the techniques of playing and composing, were my playing better than
it is).

I can think of three works which I have read. The third book of Plato's
Republic, Nietzsche's 'Birth of Tragedy', and Adorno's 'Introduction to the
Sociology of music' and 'Philosophy of modern music' to represent this
area, and I have heard of a theorist named 'Ingarten' (sp?) from a
professor friend of mine. Are these texts which would be accessed, or is
there some body of literature out there which specifies study in this field?

Thanks for any reply. I do have some interest in this area, and would love
an example of a reading list, or of (ahem, and apologies) 'seminal' texts
in the field.
