Because we Americans like our little conceits. This is the richest country in
the world, and my students come to class stylishly attired as
beggars--designer jeans that are bought with holes already ripped in the
knees, etc.  Study fashion. There's a reaosn people in poor countries want to
look presentable, and well-to-do people in the US want to look disreputatble.
