further to my previous message - a colleague at the University of Zululand
advises that the newspaper Ilanga was founded in 1903, and is now 100%
Inkatha-aligned.

support, and so its naming might have reflected western influence. The
(Barolong) writer Sol Plaatje (in his Engish novel Mhudi) uses sun-imagery
in depicting the after-effects of a massacre of a Barolong village by
Matebele forces. I'm paraphrasing from memory, but he associates the
violence and devastation with the setting of the sun, never to rise again
...
