Will "agon" work for you here? I'm thinking of it in terms of the site of
the struggle. Rhetorically, if one can "stake that out," as you put it, one
has the advantage of the terrain--one has asserted the definition under
which the contest is to be conducted.  Sometimes one can get away with it.
