____
What made you decide to start the site?
We were shocked by the number of times judges selected their own students as
winners of “open” competitions and that only a few people complained. We felt
there needed to be a watchdog organization to track these duplicitous doings,
especially because money is involved.

____
What's the most egregious, in your opinion, of the ethical lapses your site
has chronicled?
Jorie Graham, who taught at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop for many years, and is
now at Harvard, selects her students regularly as winners of various
contests. Richard Howard is recurring judge for the Paris Review Prize, a book
competition at Zoo Press, and has selected his students as winners too. Choosing
their own students not only looks unethical to outsiders, but also appears to be
lazy and arrogant. Are they even reading the pool of manuscripts? Are their own
students the only ones worth considering? ___
