Part of the problem as I see it, is always discussing humans in cultural blocks. And this is very common amoungst those who push for decentralization (sometime local autonomy). Why is the unit always "culture"? The problem is that the focus on cultural autonomy can easily become a conservative force. Cultural autonomy for the Islamic fundementalists might sound good from a certain perspecitve, but I beleive it is our task to support those within such "cultures" (noting that I really don't believe in cultural blocks at all but that all "cultures" are not only full of fissures but that they have always been in process of construction, deconstruction, and hybridity--"a culture" as such does not exist) that are breaking out of these discursive constructions we call "cultures." We should always be supporting the breaking down of such barriers, in other words. Once the terms become large scale, homogenizing, corporate capitalism versus small scale, heterogeneous culture we have already lost. This is a bit of a false dichotomy, but one that is very powerful today, especially in the anti-globalization movement. The reality is that capitalism loves "cultures" and "cultural difference." Local autonomy as a form does nothing without an anti-political/anti-capitalist content. This, of course, has nothing to do with the simplistic idea that Islamic fundementalists need to become anarchists. Anarchists will always be a minority, but hopefully a minority that is a bit more strategic in its interventions in the future. This Amorry Star stuff sounds like just the kind of thing we should critique very hard. If moving beyond left and right means anything, it has to mean leaving capitalism behind as both the left and right are forms of capitalist politics. The version that Starr seems to be talking about is big capitalism versus small capitalism; in other words, the left of capitalism gives into the the far right version. sasha ----------------- ====------------- Anarchist Discussion Board -- Also for response to KKA, WD and Aporia: http://pub47.ezboard.com/banarchykka The Killing King Abacus Page: http://www.geocities.com/kk_abacus __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
