Thanks for the reference Jesse, and the welcome.  I'll check out the archives when I've got some time, and I'll try to put together a summary of my paper to post on the list.
 
That's an interesting idea re Deleuze and Lacan.  Maybe it does work both ways, though I don't think Deleuze is an essentialist in the way Barthes would mean, which is usually how I would use the term (i.e. essentialism/myth as second-order re-reading of a sign in such a way as to make it carry an "ideological" message which is connoted rather than denoted, and which is transmitted/received rather than written/read).  But of course, this isn't quite what Newman means...
