Subject: CFP:Panel on Constructing Indigeneity

Hi Everyone,

Patricia Sant and I are organising a panel for the Crossroads in Cultural
Studies Second International Conference to be held in Tampere, Finland, 28
June to 1 July 1998. Website for the Conference is
http://www.uta.fi/crossroads/

Our Session is on "Constructing Indigeneity" - any interest? You can reply
privately to avoid clogging up everyone's computer . . . Apologies for any
cross-postings!

A session description - still under construction - follows:

"Constructing Indigeneity"

This session will focus on representations of Indigenous peoples, both as
self-representation, and on representations of Indigenous peoples by the
dominant group/s in societies. These constructions may be drawn from
history, sociology, anthropology, biography, autobiography, art, fiction,
performance art, print media, television, film, still photography, and so
on.

Among other issues which may be addressed are (the presence or absence of)
gendered differences in (self)represention, present versus past or
retrospective (self)representation, the development of new genres,
governmental constructions of Indigeneity, etc.
