Date: Mon, 2 Mar 1998 08:50:57 +1000 (GMT+1000) From: s021656-AT-student.uq.edu.au (Samuel Bogitini) Subject: cold shudder Dear friends, Appearing in a discussion list that calls itself 'postcolonial', Kani Xulam's perspective on the US-Iraq debacle, and Bogitini's reproduction of the text, displays a naive ignorance of the wider and more pressing issue of US hegemony and domination that send a chill down my spine. Saddam is no angel but, to put it in perspective, the Kurds have also been persecuted by the US-backed Turks (who are at this very moment conducting an offensive on the Kurds in Iraqi territory), the Iranians and by the so-called 'coalition against Iraq'. The solution to the Kurdish problem lies not in the bombing of babies in Iraq but in the promotion of a genuine international initiative. While we all must emphatise with the plight of the Kurds it must not distratct us from the central issue of US hegemony and the promotion of a particular form of lifestyle that is both environmentally destructive and socially unjust. Bombs for oil, as Madeline Albright or Clinton would have it, is definitely not the kind of 'postcolonial' world that I would like my child to grow up in. We should be cautious about Mr. Xulam's piece as he represents an organisation (coincidentally based in the US) with an explicit agenda. Mr. Bogitini, however, is a naive student eager to find a 'new' perspective.......which is regrettable. Mr Bogitini........ wake up!!!!!! SHAH It seems to me that I have been defined by somebody else as a "naive student". A contradiction of your own argument. Let's be practicle mate. Where does your argument will lead you to? Are you going to solve this problem but one thing for sure, this issue will only be solved by who originated it. We may all be guessing at this stage. Who knows the future? Not men.... for sure.
