Racist text angers minister
  By WENDY BUSFIELD

TERTIARY Education Minister Phil Honeywood yesterday blasted a TAFE college for using racist texts in a tourism
  course.

Mr Honeywood ordered Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE to scrap the material, which included references to
  bow-legged Japanese and fuzzy-haired Indonesians.

"We wouldn't like diagrams of Australians with beer guts and thongs," he said.

"I'll be calling the management of Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE to account early in the week."

Mr Honeywood's tough stand followed a story in yesterday's Sunday Herald Sun outlining details of the course
  material.

Designed for first-year students, the material comments on the personal appearance, language, behaviour and
superstitions of seven nationalities. It described Koreans as stern and said Singaporeans had a military posture.

Community leaders described the material as racist, disgusting and laughable.

Institute officials could not be contacted for comment yesterday.

Australian Education Union TAFE official Pat Forward said the booklet would damage the institute's good reputation in
  Asia.
