There was a discussion awhile back about novels & stories to use in a course on African literature. It has just been lately that the discussion has turned to Australian issues (and a good discussion it has been, too). I am part-way through *The Idea of Africa* right now; I could post some observations when I get further in. Have you read it yet? My impression so far is that it is less programmatic than *The Invention of Africa*. In other words, *Invention* has a few big points to make, while *Idea* has lots of little ones. I think *Idea* makes a lot more sense if you keep in mind the Foucault-inspired critique of the first book. But, as I say, I'm not very far in yet, so my opinion may change. +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Bruce B.
