You might take a look at Edward Said's <Culture and Imperialism.>
It seems to me he gives some if only a little attention to 
Dickens in relationship to Britain's imperial projects.  I recall he 
discusses Dickens mostly in relationship to Australia.  Good luck with 
the project.
