Shashwati,

There is an interesting book on the formulation of nationalism in the
(post)colonial world by Partha Chatterjee (Nationalist Thought and the
colonial world. A Derivative Discourse?, United Nations University, Totowa,
NJ, 1986). In how far it suits your project I don't know. Basically
Chatterjee argues that nationalist thought in the ex-colonies, in agreeing to
become 'modern', accepts the claim of universality of this 'modern' framework
of knowledge. Yet it also asserts the autonomous identity of national
culture. It thus simultaneously rejects and accepts the dominance, both
epistemic and moral, of an alien culture. This is probably the main dilemma
of (under)development which continues to plague most developing countries to
this very day. I hope this may help your project,

Holger
