Pinghui Liao is writing on satellite tv circulation patterns and
transformations in "Greater China" area, from a Taiwan-situated angle. He
gave a talk on same in Hong Kong this January at a conference on
International Cultural Studies I was a part of, and Stephen Chan (who
edits the lively Hong Kong Cultural Studies Bulletin) is publishing a
collection of essays on "Cosmopolitan Culture in Non-Western Contexts"
which the Pinghui Liao essay will appear in along with something by me on
the global/local dialectics of asian-pacific spaces and genres. For
further info, please email Stephen Chan at Chinese University of Hong Kong
c/o Hong Kong Cultural Studies Bulletin (hkcs-AT-cuhk.hk) which has just come
out with an interesting new issue on "Situating In Differences: Woman,
Gender, and Sexuality" re Hong Kong/PRC/transnational dyanamics. The of
course there is the nitty-gritty transnational media studies of Hamid
Naficy, who has written on "Phobic Spaces and Liminal Panics" in Iranian
media, in a collectoin of essays called "Global/Local: Cultural Production
And the Transnational Imaginary" which Wimal Dissanayake and I have edited
and just came out with Duke UP,(good stuff on Japanese/US/Korean and
Chinese media too, not to mention Hawaii). Hope this helps a bit, Rob
