Keri Hulme's THE BONE PEOPLE--an unidentified diesease (appears to be cancer)
in the major character, Kerewin; also a character (Simon, a child) who
exhibits what appears to be an autistic condition but in fact probably is
psychological

Also, in Anchee Min's RED AZEALA the narrator has TB (and depression--no
wonder when you find out about her life)

Alice Walker's POSSESSING THE SECRET OF JOY--character with serious
depression as a result of female genital mutiliation
